Does he wear the number 7 jersey because his birthday is on November 7, and the match was played on 7 May? We may never know. But what we do know is that Izima FC’s number 7 is a highly intelligent player and a master of deception in terms of hiding his presence during the game. As Izima FC took on Ohanze All Stars in a local Obingwa Community derby that was the very first match of the Supalig, the diminutive Friday kept finding pockets of space behind the Ohanze defenders. Unsurprisingly, he was completely unmarked when the Izima goalkeeper Uwaoma Goodluck in the eleventh minute of the first half launched a counterattack with a throw-out after a failed Ohanze attack.
Seeing the danger, Lucky Echefula, in goal for Ohanze, rushed out to intercept the ball. But the crafty Friday outsmarted him as the ball bounced in front of both players. Without bothering to control the ball, Friday simply lobbed the ball over the advancing Echefula into an empty goal. The goal required composure and technique, both of which Friday displayed. The goal was worthy of separating both teams in a truly fierce local derby and deserving of the Goal of the Week award, which comes with a N10,000 cash prize for the winner.
